Abhayagiri Stupa, located in the ancient city of Anuradhapura, is one of the most significant and majestic stupas in Sri Lanka. Built in the 1st century BC by King Valagamba, it was part of the Abhayagiri Monastery, a major center of Theravāda and Mahāyāna Buddhism. Standing originally at around 100 meters tall, the stupa was a symbol of religious and scholarly excellence. Abhayagiri attracted monks and scholars from across Asia and played a vital role in spreading Buddhist teachings. Today, it remains a revered site for pilgrims and a testament to Sri Lanka’s rich spiritual history and architectural brilliance.
