Alu Vihare Temple

Alu Vihare Temple, nestled in the hills of Matale, holds a revered place in Sri Lanka’s Buddhist history. It is famously known as the site where the Pāli Canon, the sacred scriptures of Theravāda Buddhism, was first committed to writing in the 1st century BCE. Surrounded by natural rock formations and serene landscapes, the temple complex features ancient caves adorned with murals, inscriptions, and statues of the Buddha. Alu Vihare is not only a spiritual site but also a symbol of preservation, where the oral teachings of the Buddha were safeguarded during a time of turmoil and transition, ensuring the survival of Buddhist doctrine for future generations.
