Kelaniya is a historic suburb located about 10 kilometers northeast of Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is best known for the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, an ancient Buddhist temple believed to have been visited by the Buddha during his third and final visit to the island. The temple is renowned for its beautiful murals, sacred relics, and annual Duruthu Perahera—a vibrant religious procession held in January. Situated on the banks of the Kelani River, Kelaniya holds immense religious, cultural, and historical significance and continues to be a major pilgrimage site for Buddhists in Sri Lanka and beyond.
