Mirisawetiya Stupa

Mirisawetiya Stupa is one of the oldest and most sacred stupas in Anuradhapura, built by King Dutugemunu in the 2nd century BCE following his victory over King Elara. According to legend, the king once forgot to offer chili curry (miris) to the Buddha before his meal, so he built this stupa as an act of devotion and named it "Mirisawetiya" to symbolize that offering. Located near the Tissa Wewa reservoir, the stupa enshrines sacred relics of the Buddha and reflects the early brilliance of Sinhalese Buddhist architecture. Though it has undergone several restorations over the centuries, it remains a tranquil and spiritually important site for pilgrims and visitors alike.
